Local Councils Are Being Reshaped: What Do You Want to See?

This month (April 2026), the government have confirmed plans to reorganise the structure of the councils across Norfolk and Suffolk, with 3 new councils replacing 8 in Norfolk and 3 new councils replacing 6 in Suffolk from April 2028. The changes will not be made immediately; parliament must first approve them.

The three proposed new councils in each county would be responsible for all the services currently provided by the district and county councils, including social care, education, housing, waste collection, and planning.

Very little information has been shared regarding how social care will function under the new structure. As yet, no information has been shared on whether care services will be redesigned, whether there will be staffing restructures, whether funding will change, or whether there will be any impact on care providers’ contracts, service users or eligibility for care.
